The Lost Course of Askernish

One of the most exciting golf projects to be undertaken for many a long year - the lost course of Askernish on the Isle of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland - is offering a truly unique opportunity for LIFE MEMBERSHIP!

Old Tom Morris designed the original course in 1891. Part of it was lost to an airfield in the 1930's and a nine-hole course is still in existence - the last remaining links course in its original form with natural fairways and greens. The linksland contains a profusion of wild flowers, grazing sheep, cavernous bunkers topped with marram grass protecting the greens, the untamed Atlantic Ocean visible from every hole and with breathtaking views of Scottish beauty, sea, beach and rugged glacier-torn mountains

Now in 2006 the 18-hole course is to be restored! The islanders are being helped by a group of volunteers - Greenkeepers, led by the renowned Gordon Irvine and Course Architect Martin Ebert.

Malcolm Peake, another volunteer devoted to preserving golf's original qualities, says, "visiting the island is more like a pilgrimage, remembered for golf on a championship-quality links, the chance for some wonderful salmon fishing or the opportunity to catch some elusive wild brown trout. Perhaps, too, a day's shoot on the moors for grouse and at dusk some flighting duck and geese".

For just U.S. $5000 (£2500) you can become one of the 100 Founder Life Members of Askernish Golf Club, and also be part of golfing history by putting something back into the game we all love.
